On a spring morning while it was still dark, the villagers were woken by loud human voices and the enquiries yielded that a big whale had landed on the village beach and everyone became anxious to visit the sight and see the huge animal and like of which they had never seen.
The tide had gone out but on the empty beach they saw the huge body of the stranded animal. As they went closer, they saw the injured animal in a miserable state. While struggling it must had brushed against the sharper points of the coral reefs of the surrounding seas.
They were at a loss as what to do with the stranded animal. Some one suggested that it could not survive the dry condition affecting its skin. Everybody hurried back to the village and brought plastic buckets and other containers to pour the seawater on its huge mass.
Marine mammals make a wide variety of sounds, differing in type, frequency and strength. The sound frequencies used by cetaceans vary from below what humans can hear, such as the calls of blue whales, to frequencies far higher than those we can hear.
Two children, a brother and sister team was unable to sleep. With one eye half opened she looked at her parents asleep in the nearby bed and made sure that they were fast asleep with loud snoring. The girl got out of her bed and tip toed towards the door and when her brother saw her, he joined her too.
They walked towards the beach, holding each other hand and totally afraid of the sea spirits that come out at night to get hold of lonely souls on the beach, as the villagers believed.
‘What should we do that if one of that spirit comes and bar our way.’
‘We would say that we are the friends of the stranded whale.’
‘Would it let us go, to the animal.’?
‘Sure it would know that we are going to comfort the stranded animal,’
They came to the animal and found it to be in a terrible state, it had great difficult in breathing and its sighs were mingling with the sighs of the see. The sea was feeling the pain too. The children felt the pain too and went around and put their arms out to hug the creature.
‘Look! It is crying.’
A jelly like liquid was pouring down its sad eyes and seeing it the children began to shed tears too. Hot liquid fell on its skin and comforted it. The girl began to sing an old song and the brother joined too. They began to string together random words, which came out of their hearts, -words of love, words of pathos, and words of pity.
The night was coming to an end.
In the morning villagers found the animal dead, with the children still asleep hugging the cold corpse.
